Bernard Ennis answered on 9 Nov 2015:

Do you mean when did it begin? My career began after I finished my A levels. For some vague reason I ended up doing A levels in History and Sociology and I didn’t get good enough grades to get into University. I was at a loose end, so when my next door neighbour said that there was a job going in the laboratory where he worked, I applied. The work involved testing parts for car engines to make sure that the steel they were made from was good enough. I found I really enjoyed it and I started doing a course in materials science at college and when I finished that I left my job to go to University full time to study materials science, which is what I am still doing more than 25 years later.

The where is in my home town of Coventry at a company called Brico Engineering.
