Bernard Ennis answered on 11 Nov 2015:

Diamond light source is a synchrotron facility which is a type of particle accelerator. Inside there is a huge ring of electromagnets which speed up electrons get sped up to just below the speed of light, producing a light 10 billion times brighter than the sun. These bright beams are then directed off into laboratories known as ‘beamlines’. When the light interacts with materials it generates x-rays which we can measure to tell us about the material.
