Question: What skills did you all develop while working within science? And what skills would you recommend us which may help towards a future within science.
Hello 863tntd39,
when working in Science you learn how to set up an experiment or different experiments in a certain amount of time (let’s say, you want to do 5 experiments in 5 days…you have to be careful to be able to fit the experiments in the 5 days you have available, check if you have all the ingredients, machines available, and so on). Then you learn the importance of teamworking, this means to work with other people on the same experiments and/or in the same space in the laboratory! Sometimes it can be tricky, specially if you don’t know each other or if the time is very limited.
I think it is important for you to be curious about what surrounds you (Chemistry, Physics, Biology all can help explain the things happening around you!), you have to be stubborn (some experiments may need to be repeated over and over again, as not everything works at the first trial!) and also able to work in a team (sometimes it is more enjoyable and easier to have your friends scientist lending you a hand!)…and, very important, be able to bake cakes hehe (joking…but your colleagues will be very happy for this, specially if you bring cakes in the office)!
