• Question: How would you cope doing each of the other scientists jobs for 5 days per job? Would you struggle to keep on top of what your doing or would you be super organised and get work donr in half the speed they could?!

Asked by Science Girl!!! to Ashley, Bernard, Carsten, Monique on 7 Nov 2015.

I think I would find it very hard! The other scientists have spent a long time learning about their subject areas and jobs, so I would have to try and catch up very quickly. I like to think I’m organised, but probably not as much to get the job done in half the time!

It might be fun though, to try a different job for a day. It’s always good to try something new.

That could be an interesting experience !

I would love to be in Monique’s “job” again – doing a PhD is one of the most exciting times in a researcher’s life and you get to spend as much time in the lab as you like.

Interesting to see that Bernard spends time at the Diamond Light Source to make steel better. I design and optimize similar light sources at the moment and would like to find out more about the application side of things.

We use a lot of lasers for various applications in the lab so could also imagine to spend 5 days in Ashley’s job – although I would wait until next summer so I get a decent amount of daylight during the day.

I think it would be terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. As Monique said, the other scientists have spent quite a long time building up the knowledge that they need to do their jobs and it would be impossible to do that in five days. What would be cool though is to spend five days with one of the other scientists to see what they are doing and how they are doing it. That way we could learn from one another and see whether we can start up something new.
