      Because the International Astronomical Union made some rules about how to define a planet. Pluto didn’t conform to those rules, so it wasn’t a planet any more but a dwarf planet. Pluto itself didn’t change a bit and probably couldn’t care less about the IAU. “A rose by any other name is still a rose.”
