It is VERY time-consuming. So balancing “work” and “life” can be challenging. Also career planning for early career researchers remains a significant challenge.
As someone who’s quite early in their career as a scientist, I sometimes worry about how competitive academia (working for a university) is. There are lots of brilliant people all applying for the same jobs, so it can be a bit daunting going up against that.
That being said, even if I don’t end up staying in academia, I’ll still be glad I pursued science. I’ve had lots of fun doing it, and it’s given me lots of skills which will help in other careers too.
