Trees are living organisms – just like you and me. And, just like you and me, they need food, water and air. They get their food from the soil that they are planted in, through their roots. This is also how they get their water. Their air comes through very very small holes on the bottom of their leaves. As they take up this food, water and air, they can start storing it in their trunk, leaves and branches (much like we use our extra food to grow). They grow very very slowly though. For trees that are very big, they can be over 100 years old! The oldest tree (that we know of) is almost 5,000 years old – and still alive!
