From about your age I knew I wanted to do a job that involved problem solving and helping people. I first thought I wanted to be a police detective. As I got older I realised I really liked science so kept doing those subjects at school (even though I found maths difficult). It was only once I went to University (so 18 years old) that I realised that I wanted to be a scientist in a biology lab (before that I thought all scientist did chemistry or physics). I didn’t know that there were so many different scientist jobs available.

I always liked science, especially things to do with nature. Since I was about 5 I can remember catching frogs in my grandma’s pond to look at them and helping her with gardening which definitely got me more interested in plants and nature in general.

When I first went to secondary school I didn’t really know what I wanted to be, it wasn’t until during my GCSEs that I started to think I would like to be a scientist, but I was also thinking I would like to become a midwife and help people give birth. During A-levels i learned more about plants and that made me want to study them more, and I started thinking about how i could use plant science to help people. I think thats when I decided I wanted to be a scientist

I decided to become a scientist when I chose my A-level subjects in college (when I was 16). I really enjoyed science and was reasonably good at it so I did Physics, Chemistry and Maths. I loved my Chemistry teachers and the loved the subject and so I chose to do Chemistry at University.
