The hole in the ozone layer was formed by gas (with a long name) called chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs. These gases used to be found in fridges and spray cans, such as deodorant cans until we realised the damage they were causing. The CFCs react with the ozone found in the ozone layer and cause it to breakdown thereby producing a hole.

      Caragh has answered this perfectly!

I just wanted to add that since we stopped using these CFCs, the hole in the ozone layer has got smaller and smaller. It is smaller than it has been since 1982.
