The best thing I ever discovered was a large fossil beetle called Temnochila coerulea; it came from a bog called Thorne Moors and its a species that does not live in Britain any longer. Today it lives in just 1-2 places in the Balkans, in undisturbed forest. It tells us that with the loss of primeval forest that many of our beetles disappeared too. This is a showy purple beetle that is a predator on wood borers. As a predator its often one of the first beasts to go extinct.
