• Question: was the dress black and blue or gold and yellow ?

      It was definitely black and blue, other pictures of it came out after the debate in a better lit environment.

      The reason that the whole thing started is because the camera couldn’t properly adjust the white balance of the image. Lighting is hugely important in photography, if the light is more red, then an image will seem red, even if the object is really green!

      White balancing is the process for correcting the colour in a photo and is usually done automatically. In this case the bright background confused the camera and it got it wrong

      As Richard says, the dress was really black and blue.
      But the image the camera took is being interpreted differently by different people.
      For me, the image showed clearly a white and gold dress, while my wife saw it blue and black!
