First I was trained very traditionally in 19th century mathematical physics, which seems to suggest that all problems have been solved. When I was a graduate student, chaos theory and its connection to real-world physics was becoming more widely known. Chaos prevents traditional mathematical methods from obtaining a complete answer; you need to build ever and ever better approximate answers, using ever and ever better computers. You need a lot of maths to do this without wasting time, watts and money.
