I think I’m pretty clever at some things, like picking up ideas quite quickly and being able to understand complex concepts and plan my project… But I don’t have much common sense, like sometimes if I’m chatting I don’t look when I cross the road, which isn’t very smart!
My PE teacher used to call me Sharp by name not by nature. Needless to say, she didn’t like me much but the feeling was mutual!
Sometimes. Smartness isn’t easy to define or measure. I can always solve all kinds of really difficult mathematics and physics problems, but if my little son is bothered about something, do I always know the most helpful thing to tell him?
That’s probably the kind of question my supervisor should answer! I’m a pretty quick study – once I get the hang of something, it becomes second nature to me. I really like problem-solving too, which is good since I have to do a lot of that in my project! I think that learning is a big part of the process; before diving into the project, I had to read up on what other people had done and how they’d done it. As well as bringing you upto speed on the subject, it can help you to come up with your own ideas and devise new experiments that no one has done before.
