Genetics ❯

Rebecca Shaw

Research assistant, University of Aberdeen
I’ve been working on looking at the genes involved in the development of eyes and also looking at what genes are involved when things go wrong with eye development…

Ask Rebecca your question

Fern Johnson

NHS Clinical Scientist (Bioinformatic Genomics)
It’s not ready just yet, but I’m very excited about whole genomic sequencing coming into use in the clinic. Ultimately this will give more patients an answer or the cause of their condition…

Quantum Physics ❯

Ieva Cepaite

Quantum Computing Researcher, University of Strathclyde
People tend to believe that Quantum Computers are simply faster than Classical ones at every task. This is very much not true. Not only are they not faster at some problems, there’s loads of things that a Quantum Computer can never be used for that a Classical one can!

Ask Ieva your question

David Keeble

Head of Physics, University of Dundee
A team in Italy reported the observation of antimatter wave interference of single positrons. The positrons pass through two simple gratings, separated by 118 millimeters, each with a repeat of about 1 micrometer, then the positron is detected on a nuclear emulsion detector….

About the zone

Science moves fast. And when the curriculum moves with it, you can end up teaching things you were never taught yourself, even at university. Especially if you teach out of specialism.

Subject Knowledge Zone is a platform where teachers connect with scientists.

  • Ask scientists whatever you want
  • Develop your subject knowledge
  • Get advice for your students and stretch them with stories of real research

The activity is free STEM CLPL/CPD for Secondary teachers. Subject Knowledge Zone is funded by Education Scotland through the Enhancing Professional Learning in STEM Regional and National Partner Fund.
Additional support for the Genetics topic is provided by Wellcome Genomes Campus.

How it works

Subject Knowledge Zone is your space to ask researchers your questions and refresh your science knowledge

ASK the scientists

Ask them about cutting-edge science, STEM careers pathways, or just the funniest thing that’s happened today in their lab.

Meet the scientists
Scientists are related broadly to the following topics:

  • Particle physics
  • Genetics
  • Quantum physics
  • Coming soon: Energy, Atmospheric Chemistry, Electromagnetism
