I love answering questions as you get to learn about other peoples perspective on science and Nature; you also have to re-think your own understanding. So in a way I learn as much from this as I hope you guys are.
I hope I will be better at explaining things about science and about what I do, and I think that will definitely help me in future. The questions have been absolutely brilliant, even the ones that look easy usually aren’t. My brain’s starting to hurt a bit! :S
It’s so important for scientists to be able to explain their work to people. Scientists know that science is very important (for the economy, culture, education, engineering, quality of life to name but a few). But if scientists can’t explain their work clearly then they can’t expect people to understand how important it is. And if people don’t know how important it is, then they might stop supporting it (and so much science is supported by government money that comes from tax, and charities – so everyone’s view is important).
So, what I’m hoping to take from this is a better understanding of how to communicate how important and interesting science is to people. The more scientists who can do this, the better off science will be, and the better off we’ll all be!
Seriously though I think this is an amazing experience and I’m really pleased to be involved. Personally the things I’m learning during the process are so different to what I expected when I started I really have no idea what I will take with me. So far the biggest thing I’m learning is how to answer questions quickly and without using too many acronyms.
