When I was in research doing my PhD, yes I needed to be able to program in C++.
My line of work nowadays is working in the funding and policy side of science, so I don’t need to do programming anymore (but I do need to use a whole bunch of other skills to do my job!).
I certainly do, as its pretty much my Job to program software, However all of our experiments are done by computer, and you have to know how to program a little to use the equipment at Diamond, so all our scientists know some programming.
yes i do to some extent – but i wouldn’t call myself a programmer, i’m not that good. i know enough to let me do what i want to, but perhaps not as efficiently as a proper programmer
Yes, I do loads of programming. Writing the code that controls the experiments, writing code to analyse the data, writing code to simulate the experiments. Computers are present in just about every bit of science these days, so it’s a real advantage if you can program computers.
