The sun is hot because of a chemical reaction called Nuclear fusion. This is the combining of two hydrogen atoms to make helium at high temperatures and pressure. When this happens lots of energy is released as heat. It has been going for 4 billion years and will keep going for another 5 billion and is 15 million oC at its core! Thanks for your question.
