Great debate question: great question to ask and be thinking about 🙂
So my views are that we have a duty to try and help people that are ill and have diseases – and try and make drugs to help and perhaps cure diseases. And we cannot give drugs to people that have never been tried in a living animal – we would have no idea if they were safe or not. Would you take a drug that you didn’t know was safe? It could have very dangerous side effects.
Plus, to understand how things work we need to test on something. We don’t test on animals if we could be using cells instead because none of us want to test on animals. So a lot of research is done in cells, and we learn a lot from cells. But eventually, we need to be able to test our knowledge in a living thing. Does it work the same when there’s an organ instead of just cells?
So its a hard question to answer. Yes I don’t like that we use animals, but we would NEVER have drugs like ibruprofen and aspirin etc without using animals… so I see it as a necessary evil – in order to create drugs and cures to help millions of people, we need to use animals.
But of course testing things like cosmetics on animals i think is completely immoral.
