When I meet with any client we work on their goals: I might meet an athlete who is nervous about a competition they have coming up and wants to learn how to feel more relaxed and confident, or someone who knows that they need to be more active by doing exercise, but they need help feeling motivated to do it. So in our ‘sessions’ we talk about their problems, and work on helping them develop ‘mental skills’ to overcome those problems – I might teach them how to use imagery and breathing techniques to feel more relaxed and calm, or we might talk about their motivation and do some goal-setting exercises. As a psychologist, I have to keep notes from all my sessions, so I make notes during sessions, and then write them up neatly at the end. I then use those notes next time I meet that person, to remember what we talked about before.
