After my GCSEs I gave up on Biology because I thought it was boring (we mainly learnt about plants!) so I focussed on Chemistry and Physics which I found more interesting. During my undergraduate degree in Materials Science, I ldid a course on materials that can be used in biological environments such as the body. I found it fascinating that no matter how good it is, no engineering material is as well designed as a biological material, which are incredibly well designed. I also loved the idea that my research could help people lead better lives.

Turns out biology is **fascinating** and I never should have given it up biology. I’m even getting into plant biology now as I have space in my back garden to grow vegetables and flowers. I’m not much of a good gardener yet, but I’m working on it!

What I am most interested in is finding out what mental skills successful athletes use to help them be so successful – then I can teach other people those mental skills (like relaxation, feeing confident, focusing on goals etc) to help them in their lives.

It was something that interested me all through my undergraduate sports science course. The tutor for this module was really enthusiastic too and i thought, ‘i’d love to be like that’. I stick with the theory the more you enjoy something the harder you can work on it.
