I’ve had a couple of different experiences with working and interacting with people with disabilities. I had run a couple of training sessions for the Welsh Mencap football team. They were a group of players, all with various disabilities ranging from autism to sever learning disabilities who trained for and competed in the learning disability European Football championships in Geneva. They were a great squad and were very enthusiastic about their training and improving their performance level before heading out to Geneva in Switzerland for the Championships. I have also helped run a couple of studies with Niamh Reilly, a PhD student in my department who is carrying out a lot of this research too. Additionally to the training and research I have carried out with the guys in North Wales, I also have a sister who has a learning disability called Prada Willi Syndrome (nothing to do with shopping I should add!). I think the fact I have been closely associated with someone with a learning disability for a long time has made me want to do some work with that particular group of individuals.
