I get to decide when I work, but it does depend on what is happening in a study. If I need to visit a participant at their home I can’t just decide not to go because I don’t fancy it. I have to do my job well. As long as I get my work done and I do a great job my boss is happy. Also I can chose where I work too. My office is in Bradford Hospital but sometimes I prefer to work at home or at Leeds Uni. Today I was not feeling very productive sitting at my desk in my office so I came home early, then went out to play netball and now I’m doing a few more hours work before bed.
Usually 8.30 to 4.30 in the office. Any later and the traffic’s too bad! I also do a lot of work from home or in the field. I can decide my times when I’m not teaching but most industry people I meet with have to do regular hours.
At the minute I pretty much get to decide! I have a list of “things to do” everyday to make sure my projects progress as they should do…but I never quite manage to get everything on my list done. You have to be very self motivated to be a scientist as you work alot on your own and you will only be as successfull as the time and effort you put into it . So although I get to decide when I work and it can be pretty flexible (some days I don’t get up till 10.00am…)..I still have to work monday to friday…and sometimes on the weekend! (but if I do this I take a weekday off instead 😉
Yeah it is very flexible and because you read about your topic so much you become a kind of expert in your field which means that you know what should work and what shouldn’t. Its also good o speak to others about your ideas because soemtimes they see things that you haven’t thought of.
