The Sun is hot because in the centre there is a huge nuclear fusion reaction – hydrogen atoms coming together and becoming helium because of the huge pressure there, which releases huge amounts of energy. The centre is about 10-20 million degrees. The surface is only 6000 degrees or so, but this is still much hotter than the Earth.
