Volcanoes are made by liquid rock that rises up through the earth and comes out onto the surface. Sometime this happens quickly, and sometimes slowly. When the liquid rock gets to the surface it freezes solid. The next bit of liquid comes out on top of this first one that is now frozen, and it freezes too. Over time, more and more bits of liquid rock comes out and freezes, so you make a big pile of rock – which how the volcano is made. I chose to study how the liquid rock behaves because knowing this means we can figure out how the solid rock will behave – will it explode? Will it just dribble out? Will it jet into the atmosphere? Also, it means I get to go to the volcanoes – and they are really cool!
