A cloud of gas collapsed into a disk (because all clouds have a little bit of rotation, which stops it from collapsing into a single point). The centre of the disk made the sun, but spirals in the disk collapsed to make planets. The Earth was made when lots of rocks that formed out of these spirals collided into one planet. Then the Moon was made when another planet collided with the Earth and sprayed out a lot of molten rock, which cooled and formed the Moon.
Yep, basically a giant (and I mean GIANT!) cloud of dust gradually started to gather together and make bigger and bigger clumps. As these clumps grew they made bigger and bigger crashes. The crashes turned movement energy into heat energy, which started to melt these big clumps. About 9 clumps form our solar system – these are the sun and the eight planets (sorry pluto – you miss out on being called a planet in this answer!). The earth was so hot that all the iron melted and dribbled down inside to the very middle – which is the core. It’s lucky that the earth formed this way – because without the iron core we wouldn’t have what is called an “electro-magnetic dipole”, which is an invisible force that shields the whole planet from the worst of the suns energy.
