Death valley. Been there twice now and it’s been the most amazing experience both times. It definitely earned its name. It’s one giant expanse of waterless desert that is so isolated and desolate that it’s amazing to camp there and explore.
Difficult! I actually quite like cities – last evening we sat watching the sun go down in Lyon on the banks of the Rhone, which was pretty great. But there are lots of natural things that are good, too – I love walking in the Alps. But then I’ve never seen the Grand Canyon, Niagra Falls or the Northern Lights before! Perhaps I should, one day…
It’s so hard to pick just one place, but if you count a country as a place then definitely New Zealand. New Zealand has heaps of different types of volcanoes all over it’s north island, and has amazing beaches and clear water there too. Incredible sand dunes and forests make up the rest. It’s south island is a huge mountain belt that is growing every day, and enormous rivers are carving it into sharp pointy peak. There are rivers of ice too – glaciers, and at the very southern most tip are mountains that are sinking into the sea! It is home to animals and plants that live no-where else, and has one creature called the Tuatara (a reptile) that hasn’t changed in 200 millions years – yep – that’s a loooong time! You can see the southern lights there sometimes (Aurora Australis – the northern lights are called Aurora Borealis) and it has huge waterfalls and canyons that hardly anyone visits! You can probably tell I like New Zealand a lot 🙂
The stars from the top of Mauna Kea in Hawaii are pretty amazing. It’s one of the darkest (and driest) sites in the world (which is why there are loads of telescopes up there) and so you can see the whole Milky Way stretching right across the horizon and millions of stars right down to the horizon. Makes me feel a little bit in awe of nature.
I think Antarctica is pretty cool (see what I did there?) . Seriously though, I would LOVE to go to Antarctica.
Also Tenerife, which is an island off the coast of Morocco. (Lots of British people go there on holiday, actually). But the cool thing about this island is that it’s only about 70km from top to bottom, but it has a volcano in the middle of the island that goes up to 12000ft! And the island is a desert in the south, and tropical in the north.
Also Lanzarote, which is another island near Tenerife. That one also has a volcano (an active one) and they’ve actually build a restaurant on top of it and cook your food over the volcano!
