Well, no-one knows. I don’t believe in God or a religion, so I believe that people just die. A Greek philosopher called Epicurius built a philosophy around this – he said that you shouldn’t worry about dying because you won’t care when you’re dead, and that you should focus on having a good life and having good friends. It’s hard when people die that you know, but it’s part of life so it’s something that you’ll have to face one day. Just remember the good times you had with them, and why they were special to you.
Great answer Sam! From a biological point of view, when you die the chemical and electrical reactions that happen in your body while you’re alive stop. Slowly the matter that makes up your body is reorganized into other forms. When you are alive you grow and gather matter together, and actually while you’re alive you are constantly being recycled as matter arrives into and leaves your body.
This is one of those questions that are more philosophical for a scientist, because one of the basic scientific principles is being able to do repeatable experiments to see the results. Of course, this is one of those experiments that you won’t know the answer to until you have no use for the answer anymore!
