Ah, so the Matrix isn’t a parallel universe. The Matrix was a film where everyone was trapped in a computer simulation, a bit like a very realistic virtual reality videogame. When people went into the matrix it was a bit like joining an online videogame.
It’s possible that we’re part of a computer simulation – after all, my job is to make simulations of the universe, but we don’t have the computing power to simulate people (yet!). But you’d need a computer bigger than the universe to simulate the whole universe down to every atom, so it’d have to be a big computer!
As for parallel universes – perhaps! But we haven’t detected any yet, and it’s not clear how we would detect them. One possibility is that quantum mechanics makes parallel universes all the time, but this is still debated by scientists and philosophers.
