No, or at least not like in the films. I do think there is a strong possibility of there being life out there somewhere (there is just so many planets in space why not?), but I don’t think it will ever visit us or talk to us as the Universe is just too big.
Well, its not really a case of ‘believing’ I think, because as scientists we want proof and a good reason, rather than belief. But I get your question! I do think aliens exist – and I’ll take you through my reasoning…. Life on earth either started here or came from somewhere else. If it came from somewhere else than we’ve already answered the question – yes there is life elsewhere so aliens exist! If life started on Earth all by itself I don’t see why it couldn’t have started anywhere else as well. Earth is very special and rare, yes, but there is a very good chance that places just like earth are all over the Universe – it’s a huuuuge place! So if all you need is an earth like planet to start life – why not start it all over?
Sure, the universe is big enough, so there must be some out there somewhere. There could even be bacteria on Mars, or life in the oceans under the ice in Europa (a moon of Jupiter). But I don’t think little grey men have visited us, or at least there’s not much evidence for it. The universe is always weirder than we think, though, so who knows what we’ll find?
Arther C. Clarke once said (perhaps not entirely jokingly) “The best proof that there’s intelligent life in outer space is the fact that it hasn’t come here.”
I definitely think there is other life out there. What it looks like, whether we can consider it “intelligent” as per our definition of the word “intelligent” I have no idea. But it’s a huge universe – it would be a huge waste of space if there wasn’t!
From a scientific point of view, we have no proof either way. It’s impossible to prove that aliens don’t exist until we explore every possible area of the universe but we only have to find them once to prove they exist.
However, personally I find it hard to believe that we’re alone in such a vast universe. But like I said, it’s just my feeling, I have no proof.
