Short answer – Yes we can try, and hopefully not.

Several research groups are trying to make artifical pancreases to treat diabeties. I’ve linked to one group from the University of Cambridge below. It basically takes an existing piece of equipment called an insulin pump (that injects a chemical called insulin in the body) and combines it with a sugar sensor that measures the level of sugar in your body. By implanting the pump and sensor and then connecting them both to a computer to control everything, they are able to tightly control the levels of sugar in your blood.

Because the insulin pump is already well understood, they don’t risk it being rejected by the body.

We’ve currently engineered bacteria to make insulin, which is pretty cool, but people still need to inject it, of course.
