Yeah, I read a lot of science fiction when I was younger – things like Arthur C Clarke, Isaac Asimov. I met Alastair Reynolds – he came to my dept to give a talk about using astronomy research in his books, which was interesting. I really like Ursula Le Guin, who writes more about different societies and how they work. Iain M Banks’s books are also good, and it’s really sad that he died recently.
Star Wars is fun, but the science in it isn’t very accurate – it’s difficult to find good science in films. Science fiction books are usually better, because they don’t need special effects and are often more accurate scientifically.
