I hope not to be ‘forced’ to change it – it is my dream job!

Not by choice! But I will have to change it soon when I finish my PhD. I’m looking to get a job in science communication so that I can run events like this and get scientists talking to students like you!

I think there are other careers I’d be happy working in and it’s definitely possible to do science outside of universities in a company for example. (There are people employed as laser technicians for example that go around the country fixing and setting up lasers.)

However, I absolutely love my job so I’d much rather stay put!

I would never say “never” – I have no plans to change, however aspects of my job (i.e. being a ‘Lecturer”) are constantly changing, such that if you look at my job today, and look at what i was doing 3 years ago, things really are quite different.
I’m in much more a ‘leading’ role now, so I have to lead other people and support them in their work – be it research or teaching – and I’m doing a lot of work outside the department and with the university as a whole now.

I hope to never lose sight of the science though – that for me is absolutely brilliant 😀

I love doing research, and I love working at the University but I can;t see myself doing the same job forever. I want to try different things in life, to experience different jobs, preferably challenging, so that I will have the satisfaction of succeeding in a number of different roles.

Science gives you a unique way of thinking, and I do not want to be trapped into thinking that I should only work as a scientist in a lab or academia. When the time comes I am ready to move on and do something different.
