I was always fascinated about extraterrestrial life. In fact when I was a teacher I used to finish my lessons by giving the students an open ended question for them to think about possible answers. Most of the questions were in fact about alien life forms, with the question: ‘do aliens exist?’ being highly contested between my students.
I really enjoyed forces in Physics. We had lots of practicals when we were learning about them and made pulley systems and cars to run down a hill that we had to adapt to slow them down or speed them up!
Transition metal chemistry was *awesome* – particularly vanadium! Learning about how the colours came about from the different oxidation states, and how it was all down to an electron hopping about between energy levels.
Of course, I didn’t know then that, really, transition metals are pretty poor at showing their colour – the colours are cool, but they really are very low intensity.
Definitely enjoyed the quantum mechanics in physics A level, although good old classical mechanics and engineering problems of how to balance a see-saw and things like that were still really fun. In chemistry, I preferred learning about the structure of the atom and electrons to learning anything about horrible organic reaction mechanisms – something that still hasn’t changed.
