My research could be consider quite ‘fundamental research’ as it’s more aimed at understanding the mechanisms that make light-initiated reactions happen, rather than trying to solve a goal, such as building a new solar cell.
However, that doesn’t mean that my research doesn’t have a huge number of potential applications or isn’t really important. Understanding the mechanisms which make reactions happen means we can predict with huge accuracy what kinds of molecules are likely to be good in solar cells or understand why some people get skin cancer (caused by UV light initated reactions in your DNA) and others don’t.
