Up till I came to the UK I used to live with my parents were I was able to visit my nephews and nieces whenever I wanted. In fairness, sometimes I used to think that they spend too much at my home, but I never realised I could miss them so much.
Family is the most important thing in my life, and it takes a lot of effort to come back and do my work every time I go to visit, but it is worth it, as I know I am improving my career while doing something beneficial for everyone else. I still try to visit my parents and siblings at lest a week every three months, depending on the circumstances at work.
Sometimes it is tough and I still get homesick even after 8 years of living away from them. But I love my life that I’ve created. And while I do get homesick, it never lasts very long because I’ve made a lot of friends. The best part about going to Uni is that you meet so many new people! I’m lucky that I’m only a couple of hours away from my family so can pop home for a weekend really easily but with the wonders of the internet and video chats, we can see each other whenever we want!!
I don’t find it to bad to be honest. I was a little worried when I first went to university (I moved a long way from home for my undergraduate – not quite as far as Matthew though I suspect!) that I’d find it tough but I made loads of friends really quickly at university and when you’re busy enjoying your course and clubs, it’s hard to find the time to be homesick.
I do enjoy going back home to see my family when I can as I live a lot closer now but I’m so used to living independently these days that they drive me mad if I stay too long!
It’s tough being away from my partner, but I guess with my parents and brother it’s really a process.
I remember when I first went to University – i felt sad at first, the feeling that ‘life is never going to be the same again’, and you know what? I was right. Life has never been ‘the same’ since that point. It has been amazing! Far better than I could possibly have hoped for!
Yes, I miss my family, and I still like to visit my folks every so often, but they do drive me crazy sometimes!
