Moon rocks look quite similar to rocks that are found on Earth. The rocks I study from the Moon are volcanic rocks that exploded out of a volcano billions of years ago (they are quite old!). These rocks are made up of lots of different tiny crystals (called minerals) which are very pretty and shiny. And then each of those minerals is made up of different elements. The most common elements are silicon, oxygen, iron, magnesium, titanium and calcium. There are many different types of rock found on the Moon. The ones I study are dark and cover large areas of the Moon. When you look at the Moon, you can see dark areas and light areas. The lighter areas are known as the lunar highlands and the rocks mostly contain a mineral called feldspar. The dark areas are known as the lunar maria (meaning ‘sea’) because ancient astronomers thought there were seas/ oceans on the Moon. We now know those areas contain basalt…the rocks I study!
