The distance between Earth and Mars varies because they are different distances from the sun, so they go around the sun in different periods of time. That means that sometimes Earth and Mars are on the same side of the sun and are about 54.6 million kilometres apart. Sometimes they are on opposite sides of the sun and then they can be about 401 million km. The average distance they are apart is about 225 million km.
