Pluto has a really eccentric orbit, so instead of going around the sun in a circle, it is a big ellipse. That means that sometimes Pluto is closer to Earth than at other times. At the closest point, Earth and Pluto are 4.2 billion km away – that’s 4200000000 km! When they are farthest away it is 7.5 billion km.

Hello Giorgio, the ‘dwarf’ planet Pluto is even further away than Neptune – which is the furthest ‘normal’ planet from Earth. Pluto is 5 billion kilometres away or 4.7 billion miles (if you prefer miles to kilometres)!! Hard to imagine isn’t it??!! It gets very cold there : -)

It’s always incredibly far, but sometimes it gets slightly nearer and then even further away. Something like 6000000000 km away from Earth on average
