Marble is what is called a metamorphic rock, which means it is rock that changes (metamorphs). So different types of rock go through a crystallisation process, where they change their structure and the end result is marble. So that is why it has veins and swirls in it, and is so pretty (IMHO) 🙂 It looks different depending on the type of rocks that went together to make it.

Hello Giorgio, marble is a beautiful rock that I have studied in my undergraduate degree. It once started as something called a limestone that’s found on the bed of many seas/ oceans. Over time, the rock gets crushed by the weight of other rocks and it undergoes something called ‘metamorphism’ (a difficult word to pronounce!). The pressure and the heat of the crushing causes it to turn to marble…a much harder rock than limestone! : -)
