Well, the first answer is quite boring, you need a lot of money! All the equipment needed to do experiments and all the people needed to keep a lan running require a lot of money. So normally what happens is a team of scientists will have an idea of an experiment they want to do, and will have to apply to the government or another research group that has a lot of money, we call this applying for a ‘grant’ then if the scientists have a good idea they’ll be given some money to do the research, which might mean they have to build a brand new lab.
