If a meteor was headed on a collision course with Earth, we might be able to divert it using either rockets attached to the asteroid itself, or sometimes asteroids are very iron-rich so we could attract it off-course using a large magnet. This is just my own speculation! This could be pure science fiction for all I know. The best way to improve your odds of surviving a meteor impact is to live on multiple planets — this is actually one of the main reasons for colonising Mars, in case there is an unforeseen catastrophe.
