Originally, it was the thought that humans could one day terraform Mars! I’m not working on that now, and have doubts as to whether it would work. But that is what got me started on science.
I also had a great physics teacher, that got me to think harder than any teacher I ever had before. That made a HUGE difference.
I’m not 100% sure, at one point in my 20’s I didn’t have a job so I went back to university to do a physics degree. When I finished that I moved from New Zealand to Australia to do a PhD.
I think partly I started on the science path because my parents worked in science, but I think it’s also because I love solving problems and figuring out how things work. That’s what science is really about.

I’m not sure anyone in particular inspired me to become a scientist, although I was completely fascinated by NASA’s space program growing up. I loved watching the shuttle launches on TV and reading all about the astronauts, and that’s what I wanted to do when I was younger! That kind of stuck with me growing up, and spread to loving all things about space 🙂
