I did it in an architects office because I was interested in engineering. It wasn’t that great, I got to do a few CAD drawings, but mostly it was photocopying and stuff like that.
I got the chance to do 3 kinds of work experience.
At age 16 I did 2 weeks in a vets. I wanted to see operations and see if I would like being a surgeon. I almost passed out, so decided that wasn’t for me.
At age 17 I worked for 2 weeks at the Birmingham MET office. That was fascinating, and I still remain interested in how weather forecasts work, but I just was more interested in astronomy.
Between my second and third year as an undergraduate studying physics I worked for the summer on a research project in the astronomy department at Birmingham University. I really enjoyed that – it led to the first research paper I was ever involved in, and I’ve basically been doing the same kind of work every since. 🙂
I did work experience for a company who organise events like music concerts and parties. I mostly did office work like filing and posting things but I also got to go and work at some of their events too. It was interesting, but it wan’t really what I wanted to do. I carried on working for them in my holidays and at weekends for a couple of years which was useful to earn some extra cash.
I did mine at a local hospital, working with the technician to help repair medical equipment. It was interesting, mainly to see what was inside all the boxes that are used to help people, and to see the other parts of the hospital you don’t normally get to see.
I did mine at the Safari Park! I got food poisoning on the first day and needed to be sick into a sack because we were patrolling in the lion enclosure.
I really enjoyed it because I love animals, and the physical work was really refreshing. Not much about my science is physical so I volunteer now with the national trust and other local conservation groups.
I’ve also done quite a bit of work experience with the BBC since I’ve been a ‘grown-up’ because I think I want to work in the media as well as science when i’ve finished my research.
