Not really. I enjoyed what I was studying and had a good group of friends. I think its important to surround yourself with good people as a way of making sure that if you do ever feel like giving up, you have a support network to help you.

Yes — I didn’t really enjoy school. I liked to learn things but I found school boring. It wasn’t until I got to University that I really started to enjoy learning things — my lecturers helped me to find the excitement of finding out new things and the importance of making the world a better place.

I never really felt like giving up as I tended to have good grades, but it was very scary to think about what I would do after I finish schools. In school, there is little choice to study what you want to study, but for me, it meant that I didn’t have to make big decisions about what to do with my life. Finishing school and going to the university to study the subject I picked was pretty scary.

When I started my PhD, however, I felt like giving up loads of times – I felt I wasn’t good enough and that everyone else’s work was so much better than mine and I felt like a fraud. I was lucky to have a good support group – talking to my friends and my mentors helped me persevere.

Yes sometimes. I had anxiety during my last couple of years at school and I found it really difficult to keep going with classes sometimes. I’m doing a PhD at university now and sometimes I want to give up and move to a cosy cabin in the woods far far away because it can be stressful sometimes.
But I’m really glad I didn’t give up.
