As a lecturer, I get to conduct research and do teaching. I think the teaching I do is my favourite – I’m teaching a lecture next week on what dating profiles look like and how people edit the information they put on them to look more appealing. I get to have some really interesting conversations with students about these topics – watching students learn and seeing them start to ask their own questions about a topic is very rewarding.

For me, it’s research — it’s exciting to discover new things about the world that no one knows about! Discovering patterns of how people behave, or identifying the ‘invisible’ structures of talk is really difficult so when I find something new it’s really fulfilling, and it makes me feel like I’m contributing something to the world.

      It’s two things:
      1. Getting to talk to people about their experiences and thinking about how that might help other people
      2. Getting to do lots of different interesting things so no two days are the same – I work with people with dementia doing research, teach students, find out new things, meet new people – it’s great.
