In my entire life I’ve studied for about 21 years, but I’m 25! So really, to get to be a ‘doctor’ and an expert in your field then people normally study at university for 6-7 years, and the remaining 14 years is spend at school and college.

To be a clinical psychologist (a type of therapist) I had to have a degree and a doctorate in clinical psychology, which was about 6 years of studying at university altogether.
To be a researcher, you normally need a degree and a PhD, which is also about 6 years in total.
You don’t need to do it all one in go though, and you can take breaks or do other things in between depending on what you want to do.
I’ve done a bit more than needed because I switched careers, so I’ve studied at university for about 9 years, and it will be 10 years by the time I’ve finished! (I’m nearly 35 so didn’t do all that university in one go!).
