• Question: have you ever taken something that is working perfectly and taken it apart just to see how it works

      I remember when I was little opening up a tube of toothpaste to see how the three colours don’t get mixed up in the tube!

      I used to do this all the time! That helps me understand how things work… I once, with some fiends, dismantled a car engine to see how all the parts fit together.

      I guess that’s kind of what I do now as a researcher — I take a part language to see how individual parts work (like certain words, certain pauses, or gestures) and then from that I can see how society works and how it is shaped by language.

      I’ve taken things apart to have a look at them, but I can never put them back together afterwards
