      Hi cdrcodor,

Goodness. I started studying for my GCSE’s in 1980 – 30 years ago!! It’s probably better to go back to when I started working toward my PhD though, which was in 1989 – so 21 years ago.

In school I took biology, chemistry and physics all through senior school (6years). At University I did a medical degree (large parts of the medical degree are science and a biochemistry degree) (6 years) and now I’m doing a PhD (3years). So I guess all in all about 15 years. Though full-time science study not counting school probably accounts for only 5ish years of that. I should also mention that I get paid now whilst I’m studying.

Well, I suppose about 20 really!
I’ve always been interested in nature and how things work, it’s just a curiosity I’ve had and I enjoy the natural world.
My parents encouraged this so I enjoyed science at school, I chose sciencey GCSEs (there’s a question about that somewhere), A levels and degree – now my 2nd degree is a science PhD!

So that makes rather a long time, but not as long as many of my colleagues 🙂

Hi cdrcodor…I did my first science degree when I was 19 for four years and then I did a Masters degree 10 years later for 2 years. Therefore total studying time is 6 years but I have been a scientist for 23 years (I hope that answers your question?):).
