Definitely would be how to understand scientific evidence for themselves.
We are all affected by our health and also what we do affects our health. If you read a story in the news that says eating vitamins is better for you than taking medicines then it is really important that you know if that story is based on very good scientific evidence.
This is because you may stop taking your medicines that do actually help keep you alive or stop your health from getting worse. If you’re going to that then you better be pretty darn sure that the vitamins are going to be at least as good as your medicine or better.
Being able to understand what the scientists did to show that vitamins are better is therefore really important.
There’s a nice video here to show you what I think all students should know about to help keep them healthy (it’s in a bit of a funny American accent :-): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUpd2HJHUt8
I would say understanding why we do chemistry would be the most important thing for both students and adults to know. Chemistry is useful for many things – building houses, making food, creating new materials, even trying to solve the energy problems of the world!
Understanding how and why these developments can help us is important in my opinion 🙂
