  That depends on the disease. Most will stay in your body until treated with medicine, some you would carry for life. Examples of STDs, which can be cured with antibiotics are syphilis and gonorrhoea and the ones you can treat but not cure are HIV/AIDS, herpes. Most start with rashes and similar on the genitals, sometimes the infection spreads. Some can cause infertility if left untreated. Syphilis can spread to the brain if left untreated and cause irreversible brain damage.
